Acknowledging someone when they are waiting at the bar, taking care to get each drink order just right, making eye contact when passing a drink – these are all small details that add up to a big difference.

We once sent bar staff to a wedding where the couple had bought in a mix of red and white wine for their guests.  They had estimated the number of glasses of wine that each person would drink, but had failed to take into account whether more of their guests preferred one type of wine other another.  Inevitably, the white wine ran out half way through the evening.  Each time someone asked for a glass of white wine, our bar staff would apologize sincerely, and offer up alternatives.  It wasn’t their fault, and they must have repeated the response over a hundred times over the course of the evening, but each time they did so with a friendly, helpful attitude and tried to make sure that the guest walked away with a drink and a smile.
